Twitter’s been the subject of a few thoughts in this space. Here’s another one that prompts an observation. Yes, six million mentions may still be trumped by MySpace, Facebook, five soft drink brands and Kenny G. But six million isn’t exactly left-over meatloaf. Especially for a brand that’s all of, what, two years old? I conclude that Twitter is one of those more-than-meets-the-eye technologies. It isn’t about vapid messages. It’s about the way search is evolving. I can still remember a very smart CEO of what is still is a major and successful technology company, telling me in 1996, right after NetScape went public, that an Internet browser would never make money.
Speaking of Facebook, it's amazing that the temperament of some founding CEOs is the same as it ever was. The lineage is long and some of those CEOS are legendary. I worked for a few of them. But for the sake of Facebook's long-term well-being, let's hope that Mark Zuckerberg isn't antagonizing too many of the wrong people. And that enough of the right folks hang around. But is this too much to ask of a guy that young and that successful? As for the wrong folks leaving, the "shock" created by Tim Armstrong's departure from Google just reaffirms to me how young and inexperienced so many Googlers must be. Here's fabulously wealthy young guy who's like a football team's offensive coordinator wearing SuperBowl ring on all ten fingers. He gets an offer to be a head coach. He takes it. What surprise?
