
“Blasting what he called America's "total failure of political leadership" in the battle against global warming, Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced his own company's 20-year plan to combat the growing menace on Monday night.
“Schmidt said it was time to completely "retool the energy infrastructure," essentially by replacing coal and oil almost entirely with renewable, nonpolluting sources - primarily solar, wind and geothermal.
“And what will we be driving? Plug-in hybrids, he suggested, which, as the technology develops, will almost entirely eliminate the need for gasoline, and at the same time - while recharging - could be feeding the electricity grid.
"Google's plan, put together by a small Google team over the past several months is, Schmidt conceded, a work in progress. Oh, and it will cost an estimated $2.7 trillion. But Schmidt firmly believes the return on investment, over 22 years, far outweighs the price tag. Businesses save on energy costs - Google estimates $2.1 trillion in savings in energy efficiency…”
